Depression is a difficult and challenging experience, but it is not something that we have to face alone. So, let us begin this journey together and find the strength and hope we need to overcome our struggles and find peace and joy in our lives once again.
Elijah was a prophet who was known for his boldness and faithfulness to God. He had just witnessed an incredible display of God’s power, where God sent fire from heaven to consume his sacrifice on Mount Carmel. However, after receiving a death threat from Queen Jezebel, Elijah’s spirit was crushed. He fled to the wilderness, where he asked God to take his life.
But God did not abandon him. Instead, He sent an angel to provide him with food and water. Then, God spoke to Elijah in a still small voice, reminding him that He was with him and that there were still seven thousand people in Israel who had not bowed down to Baal. Elijah’s depression was lifted, and he went on to continue serving God faithfully.
The story of Job is one of the most well-known stories of perseverance and faith in the Bible. Job was a wealthy man who had everything he could ever want. But one day, Satan came before God and asked to test Job’s faithfulness. God allowed Satan to take everything away from Job, including his family and his health. Job was left alone, sitting in a pile of ashes, covered in sores. He cried out to God, asking why he had to suffer so much. But even in his darkest moments, Job refused to turn away from God and in the end, God restored everything that Job had lost and blessed him with even more. Through it all, Job remained faithful and found hope and comfort in God.
David was a man after God’s own heart, but he also experienced depression. In Psalm 42, he wrote, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him” (Psalm 42:5 NKJV). David was a man who had been through many trials, including being chased by King Saul, losing his child, and committing adultery. But through it all, he knew that God was his refuge and strength. He trusted in God’s unfailing love and found hope and comfort in Him.
Jeremiah was a prophet who lived during a time of great upheaval and persecution in Israel. He was called to speak God’s words to the people, but he faced constant opposition and rejection. In the book of Jeremiah, we read about how Jeremiah struggled with depression and even cursed the day of his birth. But despite his struggles, Jeremiah continued to trust in God’s faithfulness and love. In Lamentations 3, he wrote about how he clung to God’s mercies, which are new every morning. Jeremiah’s story is a testament to the fact that even in our darkest moments, we can find hope and comfort in God’s unfailing love.
Paul was a great missionary who suffered many hardships for the sake of the gospel. In 2 Corinthians 1, he wrote about how he and his companions were burdened beyond measure, to the point where they despaired of life itself. But even in their darkest moments, God comforted them and brought them through their trials. Paul wrote that God is the God of all comfort and that He comforts us in all our troubles. He knew that he could rely on God’s strength, even when he felt weak.
While the Bible doesn’t explicitly say that Jesus struggled with depression, there are moments in the Gospels where He exhibits emotions of sadness, grief, and even feeling overwhelmed. He experienced deep sadness in the Garden of Gethsemane, where He prayed that God would take the cup of suffering away from Him.
He was betrayed by one of His closest friends and then arrested, beaten, and mocked. But even in His darkest moment, Jesus trusted in God’s plan and submitted to His will. He went to the cross, where He died for our sins and rose again on the third day. His sacrifice gives us hope and comfort, even during our struggles with depression.

Romans 8:38-39 – “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
